Strategy for Small Business: Reconnect With the Visionary

Medium and large corporations spend a lot on outside resources to help them define or refine their organization's vision. But if you are a small business owner, you may see "vision" as one of those slick "corporate" things senior managers do at nice retreat locations. Maybe you have been at those kinds of retreats at an earlier time in your career. Great plans are formulated and lots of enthusiasm is generated, but after the retreat, not much changes. It happens this way at many, if not most, planning sessions. As a small business owner you don't have to go that route. One of your great competitive advantages is not having a large bureaucracy that is seemingly change resistant. You can define or reinvent your business vision, and then go about the work of bringing it into reality, step by step. Many small business owners start with a vision. But the realities of survival and growth, and just getting work done, take over. The original inspiration can get lost. The passion and sheer joy, (along with the terror!) of starting your own business, can become diminished or even get lost, and with it the first vision that got you airborne.

I'd like to suggest that we as small business owners always need a vision of where our enterprise is headed. It is one of the most practical and powerful things you can do as a small business owner. If your vision is alive and well...and absolutely real to you, day-to-day, please take this as encouragement to keep going. But if that does not describe you, and if you are open to consider the role of vision, we hope this short series will be of help. We are talking about vision and its role for small business owners, to include the "What?", "Why?", and "How?" of vision. We'll start with the "What?" of vision next time, but for now may I offer this challenge if you are in the frame of mind to take a second look at the Vision issue. Do a reality check on the current status of your business vision. Take just a little time to reflect on these questions: • First, what is your vision of the business as you look out several years? • How has the vision changed since you started the business? • Do you need to refresh or rethink the "Vision" question? • Is the "Visionary" who started your business (you) still going strong, or is it time to re-energize?

Common obstacles when running a small business

Running a small business can be highly rewarding and yet still challenging. Many small business owners are unprepared for the vast amount of challenges and obstacles that they incur while not only establishing their small business but also while running it. However, the good news is that if you are a small business owner you can educate yourself about these challenges and obstacles and formulate solutions before you even have to deal with that particular problem. Once you have formulated a solution you can simply implement it and continue on with the process of growing your small business. Here is what you need to know about the common obstacles you may find when running a small business-

•Obtaining financing-Lenders typically look at small businesses as high risk when it comes to offering business loans. However, if you are willing to do the work you can present yourself to a potential lender in such a way that will minimize their reluctance to lend you money. You will need to work hard and present your lender with a well written business plan and financial documentation that shows you can repay the loan in full and on time. Finally, do not overlook the need to show your lender that you have the experience and expertise (as do all the management in your small business), to make your small business a success.
•Hiring the right people-Many small business owners find that they have a hard time finding the right people to work for them. The main obstacle often seems to be that small businesses cannot afford to pay the same type of salary and benefits that are comparable with their larger competitors. However, savvy small business owners know that they can often make up this difference by offering potential employees other types of non monetary benefits. Keep in mind that many people want the opportunity for advancement that a small business can offer. However, it is imperative that you are honest about what you can and cannot offer potential employees. The bottom line is that with some time spent on the hiring process you can find the right people who will be willing to commit to the success of your small business for a long time to come.
•Lack of sales-Many small businesses often face the challenge of having lower sales then they expected. This quickly becomes a problem since most small businesses do not have the cash reserves to weather the storm long term. However, there are steps that you can take to improve your sales figures. First of all, do not give into the urge to cut marketing. Reducing what you spend on marketing is not the answer. Rather then reducing marketing you need to take the time to determine where your marketing dollars are working for you and where they aren’t. You want to make sure that every dollar that you are spending on marketing is bringing you the highest possible return on sales. If you are spending money on marketing that is not being effective then stop that marketing method immediately. Once you move your marketing to be more effective you should see a corresponding increase in sales.
•Low employee morale-Because many times employees in small businesses work in close contact with each other it can often lead to low employee morale. Perhaps there is an interpersonal conflict between employees or an employee is bringing their personal problems to work. Whatever the problem it is important that you use your management skills to help your employees get over the slump when it comes to employee morale. This can often be done by the attitude and example that you set but it can also be helpful to make sure that your employees are being well trained so that they know what is expected of them.

All about small business finance

Every small business owner needs to be aware that how well he or she manages the finances of their business will have a direct effect on whether or not their small business is successful. Studies have shown that the majority of small businesses that fail do so because of a lack of management when it comes to the finances of the business. Keep in mind that this is true even for small businesses that were not having any problem making sales. Often times small business owners will not be focusing on the finances of their business and allow themselves to get taken off course by the day to day demands of running their business. This can be fatal for the health of your small business if you allow this to happen. Careful and concise management of your small business finances is crucial for its long term success. Here is all about small business finance.
•Have a written budget-It is surprising to learn that many small businesses don’t have a budget. This is serious mistake. Every small business owner should take the time to put together a business budget. You should not allow yourself to think that you don’t have time or that it doesn’t matter because your business is small. Your business budget is a critical tool for helping you manage the finances of your business. You will use your business budget to determine where you are spending money, how much you are spending, and how much income you are generating. Your business budget will also serve as the basis for your financial planning. Every small business owner needs to make sure that they have a written budget, that it is in a highly visible spot, and it is reviewed often.
•Always be looking for way to cut costs-One of the most common problems that can get out of control quickly is the spending that your small business will do. If you are a small business owner you need to always be keeping an eye on exactly what is being spent inside your company. You should constantly be reviewing every expense to make sure that it is something that contributes to the bottom line. If you are spending money on something that doesn’t contribute to the profitability of your company then you should eliminate that expense. You should never allow the excitement of running your own business to prompt you to spend money on something that you don’t really need. Savvy small business owners who are looking to cut costs know that there are many things that they can lease, purchase secondhand, or even barter for that will keep costs down, as well. Finally, you should always be looking for a better deal. Make sure that you are shopping the necessary costs of your small business around. This way you can make sure that you are not overpaying for anything that you need to run your small business.
•Ask for help if you need it-Many small business owners feel overwhelming pressure when it comes to managing the finances of their small business. However, it is important to know that you don’t have to know everything about business finances. There are many different people that you can consult to help guide you in this management tasks. Consult with your tax preparer, attorney, or other financial professional if you are unsure about any aspect of your small business finances. However, if you are facing a problem with your small business finances it will pay off to consult someone while the problem is smaller rather then waiting for it to get out of hand.

Delegate in your small business

If you are the owner of a small business it is crucial that you learn how to delegate to others. Many small business owners begin the process of starting and running their business themselves and believe that they have all the skills and energy that they need to be successful. This is rarely true. Even before you reach a point where you will need to hire employees you most likely will find that you need to delegate certain tasks. Your ability to delegate will not only determine how well certain tasks are done but it will help to keep you from burning out. Here is what you need to know about how to delegate in your small business.

•Start with the small things-Almost all small business owners tend to have one thing in common-they like to be in control of all aspects of their company. However, this is not a practical or an efficient way to run things. Once you realize that you need to begin delegating some tasks it can be good to start with some small tasks. This way you can still keep control over the major tasks involved in running your small business while not having to give up to much. You may find that after you delegate some smaller tasks that you not only feel less stressed but it frees you up to focus on the big picture needs of your small business.
•Use delegation to test employees-It can be a practical test of your employee’s abilities to delegate certain tasks and see how well they are completed. When you find that you are having to delegate tasks choose employees that you think will have real potential with your small business and assign the task to them. It is important to choose employees that you feel are capable and you trust them to complete the work. This way you can get a close look at how well they handle certain tasks and situations, and then you can determine if they will be a long term asset to your small business.
•Have written job descriptions-This is one of the most valuable tools that you can use for work allocation. You should start with yourself and write down everything that you feel falls under your job description. Then as you hire employees you should do the same for them. Make sure that you list the required responsibilities for every new job. One of the benefits of doing this is that it allows you to see what employees could be taking on more responsibility and which employees are excelling in their job description. Finally, don’t forget about considering yourself in the equation of work allocation. Savvy small business owners know when they have to handle something themselves and when someone else can take it on.
•Consider your own needs-Since you are the both the foundation and the leader of your small business you need to carefully consider where and how you are spending your time. By carefully considering what you are doing everyday you will be able to determine what tasks you need to be delegating. By asking yourself certain questions you will be able to decide if you are really spending your time where you need to be. Some of the questions that you should ask yourself are-
1.How much of your day are spending on routine tasks that could be done by almost anyone else?
2.How much time are you spending on tasks that should be completed quicker and more efficiently?
3.How much time are you spending on tasks that are not directly contributing to the bottom line of your small business?

How to name your small business

The name that you choose for your small business will have a large impact on many other functions of your company. In fact some business experts feel that the name you choose could be one of the most significant things that you do for your small business. Keep in mind that the name that you choose will have to not only let your customers know who you are, but what you offer. The bottom line is that your small business name will be the way you are recognized in your market. Because this is so important there are certain things that you should keep in mind before you choose a name. Here is what you need to know about how to name your small business.

•Choose a business name that is easy to remember but more importantly easy to spell-Many small business owners make the mistake of thinking that if they create a word or two for their small business then it will stand out from their competition. However, you need to keep in mind that if your customers can’t spell the name of your small business it will seriously limit how you market. You want to be able to capitalize on the word of mouth advertising that is crucial for growing a small business. Finally, a majority of customers shop online so you want a name that can be easily accessed on the internet.
•Choose a name that has impact visually-When you mention some of the most iconic brands chances are you will see a visual image in your mind long before you even bring up the name of the business. This is how you want the name of your small business to be reflected in the minds of your customers. You want them to have a visual image when they think of you. This will be difficult if you choose a name that is hard to spell or worse yet hard to say. Think of the name of your small business as the way of showing your customers what you do and what you have to offer your customers. Your small business name should help you to market what your business does.
•Choose a name that has a positive message-While you may want to be different and stand out from your competition it is also important that the name you choose for your small business has a positive message. Your customers will form a certain image of your small business based on the name that you give it. If you can add certain positive adjectives to the name of your small business that can be another good way to send the right message to your customers.
•Choose a name that is somewhat short-Many times small business owners choose the name of their business through fairly random and often haphazard means. Keep in mind that the business name that comes to you as you are out with friends or late in the night may not be the right one unless it fits at least some of the criteria listed above. Many times the problem with small business names that are chosen in the spur of the moment is that they are to long. You want to choose a business name that can quickly be communicated over phone, email, or in print. Keep in mind that you also want the name of your small business to easily fit on all printed material that you use for marketing, as well. Remember that you only have a few seconds to attract the attention of your potential customers so keeping the name of your short and precise is a good way to do just that.

How to write a business plan for your small business

Many small business owners overlook the need to have a business plan. This is serious mistake. A business plan can be a highly effective tool in helping you be able to chart and accomplish your goals. Best of all, your business plan will function as the roadmap that not only lets you know where you want to go in growing your small business it will also offer solutions and insights on the best way to get there. In addition, it is important to keep in mind that if you are ever seeking financing or investment capital you will need a business plan to show potential lenders or investors. This makes it crucial to understand how to put together one. Here is what you need to know about how to write a business plan for your small business.
•Make sure that your business plan communicates-Simply putting together pages of numbers and forecasts is not a business plan. You will need to focus on having your business plan clearly communicate what your business can offer, what your business goals are, and how you will grow your small business. Keep in mind that this section of the business plan is crucial in helping you find out what your business really is and what you want to do with it. Business experts suggest taking plenty of time to write this section of your business plan. Once you have an idea of where you want to go with your small business you will be more easily able to set business goals and a decide on a plan to achieve them. Finally, you should be able to detail exactly how you will use any capital that you acquire and most importantly how you will pay it back.
•Make sure that your business plan details your management structure and any applicable processes inside your small business-Your business plan can help you determine the right management structure for your small business. This may seem unnecessary or even time consuming when your small business is just starting out however, you should keep in mind that successful small businesses can grow quickly and you want to have an idea of who will be the right people to work in your small business. In addition, lenders and investors will be closely examining this section of your business plan since they know that they are really investing in the people who run a business rather then the products or services that the small business offers. This means that you will need to be able to show that you have the right people doing the right jobs. Finally, you can use your business plan to detail any processes that you feel are necessary for the efficient functioning of your business.
•Make sure that you understand the time commitment of a business plan-Many small business owners make the mistake of thinking that they will write a business plan once and then simply set it aside. You need to understand that your business plan is a dynamic document that you will not only need to refer to on a regular basis but it will change and need to be updated as your small business grows and develops. However, keep in mind that just because your business plan will change it doesn’t mean that you don’t need to be thorough the first time around. The more thorough and complete your business plan is to begin with the more effective it can work in helping you grow and strengthen your business. Make sure that you keep your business plan in a visible spot where you can review it and make any needed changes as you work on the long term success of your small business.

What Defines a Small Business?

A business venture falls into three major categories i.e. small, medium and large scale. They all have different definitions depending on a number of factors, but the most commonly used are the number of employees and the rate of return per year. Other factors that may be used to define the size is, the location of the enterprise and also its ownership type. A small business is defined as one that is owned by an individual and it operates privately. It could be based at the owners home or at a location that does not occupy so much space. The number of employees for such an enterprise is small, but this again depends on the country. In United States for example, the number of employees has to be less that 100, while in the European Union, they have to be less than 50. In Australia, a small enterprise is qualified as one with less than 20 employees in terms of work-force. When it comes to classification according to the rate of returns, the value of assets or the net profit may be looked at, either in isolation or in a mixed definition. A small business may not have much to show for and the annual earnings are normally less than $5000 per annum. However, this amount differs in accordance to where the enterprise is located. Many of the ventures that qualify as small businesses and which are typical examples in many nations include convenience stores, small shops, hairdressing points, restaurants, guest houses, photography shops and small scale manufactures. Others are home-based and they mostly operate online from the convenience of their homes. They are referred to as micro-businesses. They all come with their own varied advantages, which all become evident during operation depending on how their owner decides to run the enterprise.

Small Business Development - Creating Avenues For New Jobs

In these hard economic times, there is need to be creative in terms of looking for a supplementary source of income to our salaries. Developing a small business may be a good point to start from. By so doing, one will also create job opportunities for the jobless youths. This is especially true if the person setting up the venture is not able to run the enterprise alone. Small businesses create avenues for new jobs for people who get laid off from the formal employment sector year in year out. The government, having realized this, has even set up an agency; Small Business Administration, that helps individuals develop such enterprises. It does so by extending loan facilities to the entrepreneurs and giving then technical advice on how to run the ventures. Small Micro and Medium Enterprises (SMMEs) are therefore on the rise today. They fall under many categories and a just to describe a few, there is the survivalist enterprise which operates in the informal sector and is run by the unemployed persons. The income generated is below the poverty line and hence it only meets the basic needs of the operators. Another example is the Micro enterprise. This one is usually rum by family members, who must not exceed five in total. It also operates informally, meaning that no license is required. Unlike the survivalist enterprise, the micro enterprise requires one to have at least basic skills of running an enterprise. It also holds a great potential of turning into a viable formal small venture.

Why Entrepreneurs Need Small Business Credit Cards

Small business credit cards are a special type of credit cards that are meant for use by small business (as opposed to the normal credit cards or personal credit cards which are meant for the use of an individual). Some people wonder why they should go for a small business credit card when they already have one or more personal credit cards. This is a very valid question indeed. By logic, if something like small business credit cards exists in market as a separate entity altogether, there must be a special need for it. It must have some features which are useful to small businesses in particular. Though there are a lot of similarities between personal and small business credit cards (of course there would be similarities since both of them are credit cards after all), there are a few differences too. These differences are mainly in terms of the flexible credit limit, lower APR offers and attractive terms and conditions which are better for small business credit cards. Besides all the benefits which are quoted for credit cards and the additional attractive offers, there is another important reason for going for a small business credit card. The reason is business expense accounting. A lot of small businesses face this is as a major challenge. Generally speaking, two main problems quoted for small business expense accounting are business expense segregation and expense classification.

By using your small business credit card for all your small business outgo, you can very easily separate your business expenses from your personal expenses. This will thus solve your business expense separation problem. What you receive on your small business credit card bill is your business expense directly. Moreover, this report is something which your tax consultant will love too. The second problem is also solved automatically. Most small business credit cards also group together the business expenses under proper heads. Some credit cards even provide credit card statement as data feeds which can be directly fed into accounting software. Just imagine how much hassle you are saved from with this business accounting feature. Wonderful, isn't it?. The other great thing about small business credit cards is the help they offer in terms of managing the expense peaks. Though such variations are part of almost every business, they are even more critical for small businesses. So when that need for immediate purchase arises, you wouldn't need to worry if you had the backing of a small business credit card. Also, generally small business have to pay first and receive later i.e. make payments for purchases before receiving payments for services/goods, so small business credit card also acts as an intermediary who fills in the time gap at little or no additional cost. The credit card membership benefits are at its best when it comes to small business credit cards. There are discounted ticket offers, car rental offers, gift offers and many other good offers for small business credit card holders. Just check all such benefits that might be available on your small business credit card and ensure that you use them whenever and wherever required. The small business credit cards are ranked higher by the credit card suppliers too. So everything associated with a small business credit card, including the customer service, is better than the personal credit cards. Thus, small business credit cards aren't something that a small business owner can afford to miss especially with what all it offers.

Applicant Tracking System (ATS) for Small and Medium Business (SMB): A Solution for Everyone

Applicant Tracking Systems have been around for some time. Generally they are very expensive, enterprise software solutions that are designed for very large companies and organizations that have hundreds of job openings (think Fortune 500 companies). However, there are a new generation of online applicant tracking systems that are specifically designed for small businesses and smaller teams to collaborate on their hiring efforts. These tools are best suited for a company hiring for between 2 and 20 positions, rather than a recruiter or hr manager processing a large volume of resumes. These low cost solutions, are not a process tool only for the Human Resources department, but rather they are a central location for a company to view candidate profiles, provide feedback and move the hiring along quickly. Essentially it is a snapshot of how you hire, where you can post your openings, and how you can organize applicants, usually through a web-based interface. Companies that are used to using email to manage their hiring process are usually surprised to find there is software to make hiring much easier. An ATS solves some of the problems hiring managers face such as; receiving 50-100 resumes in an inbox and then going back and forth on a shared folder on feedback, losing track of applicants and did applicant X get moved to the final round. The inbox is super simple, but resumes can get lost in the pile of the constant flow of incoming emails. A good online ATS system helps do all of this in one place, with a search-able inbox of all candidates of where they stood and how fast the company moved.

A good online ATS will assist small businesses with not only helping to create an opening quickly, but also posting it on social media websites such as LinkedIn, Facebook, or Twitter as well as job search engines like Indeed. By managing your own company's career page it will keep openings updated and enable people to apply in a more effective way, rather than emailing a resume. On top of this, the company will look much more professional, hopefully attracting higher caliber candidates as well. Every good tool out there will let a user control all data and even provide an easy way to export the information should the service no longer be needed. With the proliferation of Software As A Service (SAAS) providers, the processes for hiring have become much easier and collaborative in nature. The scale they provide, and the ease of use to deploy to their clients will make software such as Applicant Tracking Systems a very useful and inexpensive tool that used to only be accessible to hiring departments with very high budgets.

How to Determine Small Business Size

Among the things that an entrepreneur needs to have in mind is, the size of the small business they hope to set up. The size is important when it comes to issues like financing and management. The Small Business Administration agency has put up some guidelines in helping determine what size is standard for what enterprise. It has come up with regulations that are captured in the small enterprises act, as required by the Code of Federal Regulations. By determining the standard size of any line of business, the SBA is also able to determine the eligibility for financial assistance for such an enterprise. A small enterprise may not be given the same amount of money as a medium enterprise. The financial requirements for these two differ by far. For example, while a small enterprise may have 100 employees, a medium one may have over 500 employees and would therefore need more funds to pay them. The size of an enterprise is also considered a key factor when issues of affiliation arises. Affiliation refers to the association with other enterprises that operate in the same line as your enterprise.

Eligibility for affiliation is dependent on such factors as common ownership, identity of interest and common management. Power to control the other depends on the percentage of ownership bestowed upon any of the controlling enterprises. If a party has more than 50% ownership, then it has the power to control. To determine the size of your enterprise, make use of the American Industrial Classification System, which is available online. It classifies enterprises according to products sold, number of employees, average annual receipts among other criteria. If your enterprise does not meet the standard size, consult the SBA and let them advice you on what to do. If you have any size protests to make, you can take it up with the agency.

The successful performance of small-medium-sized business lessons for the Olympics

Of the individual companies
The testimony of a successful Olympic Games are human activities. Persistence, courage, determination, and the clarity of the objective of the fishing effort, are just some of the obvious with all the people at the noble properties. And we all learn from this. But there is a lot more information.

More than what the eye
When basketball stand on a platform, they receive all the plaudits. There is nothing wrong with it. You have completed all the other competitors in accordance with them. They have all sorts of things for an appropriate period of time to stop to enjoy the success. But they are the only jäävuoren.

Small-medium-sized enterprises in the athlete
In particular, each competitor at the Olympics to represent small business in the invitation to tender. The other members of the business be successful without the athlete does not. We know the buses and support from different sources. And if we know that we have been the elite sports Fysioterapeuttien sports psychologists, doctors, and other medical and paramedical support.

Small-medium-sized enterprises-key message

Self development of mobility
In the past 30 years it has become a very popular self improvement movement. I have a problem with that. But I have noticed some of the "success" of this movement appears to undervalue their graduates to aid schemes.

Problems of small-medium-sized enterprises
All of the companies are "stars": the seller, a brilliant technician, commitments made by an administrator or financial manager. Often, the people who receive the personal and professional rewards and commitments from the United States. But they need a competent and dedicated support staff.

Please enter your support staff the opportunity to develop their skills for proper? stress the value and mutual business activities continuously, it is important? If necessary, gently remind your own "stars" their dependency on the support staff? Keep based on the fact that the author of the "remind" dedicated to you and your company employees, should not be "medallists".

Understanding SMEs (Small and Medium Entrepreneurs)

Understanding the characteristics of contribution of small businesses at local level and its impact on overall economic growth is a crucial factor. The term SME originated in the world of Economist, denoting firm categorized on the basis of a set of criteria including employment size and the value of their assets. The size classification varies within regions and across countries relative to the size of the economy and its endowments. It is important to note that there is a minimum as well as a maximum size for SMEs. Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) play a very significant role in the well being of any economic system. This role assumes still greater importance if the economies are in transition or belong to developing countries. As per a report by the Economist Intelligence Unit Survey economic growth (averaging 4.6% annually) has largely been due to the SMEs. While there can be a long list of benefits the SMEs offer, the weightiest is considered to be the freedom a small business offers to the entrepreneur to experiment and devise and take risks. It thus generates entrepreneurial zeal and a desire for personal achievement which motivates small investors and professionals. As per the same Economist report, almost half of those surveyed got into businesses for personal fulfillment. This urge for fulfillment then paves the way for the success of these small and medium businesses which in turn provide boost to the overall growth engine of any economy.

The benefits of SMEs are not confined to the developing world only but are predominantly visible in the developed world as well. Small and Medium Industries and small business community are the backbone of Europe's economy. There are more than 23 million SMEs in the European Union, which represents 99% of European undertakings and are responsible for 60% of Europe's GDP. They are also Europe's main job creators as they employ over 100 million people. For any economy, SMEs with high turnover and adaptability play a major role in reducing sector imbalances in that economy. Moreover, easy entry and exit of SMEs make economies more flexible and more competitive. Due to this ease of entry and the resultant increase in the number of small and medium businesses, a competitive market pressure is created which dilutes monopolies and helps increase quality of products and services. Interestingly, most of the current larger enterprises have their origin in small and medium enterprises but downsizing, layoffs and mergers have made jobs in large corporations more risky and less attractive to employees. The beneficiaries of this are the smaller companies as more creative talent is usually keener to join smaller outfits where it can have a better opportunity to utilise and explore its potential.Smaller businesses also tend to have closer customer relationships and cater to the client needs more effectively and promptly. Smaller businesses also offer better position to their owners to take quick decisions on innovation, pricing and other business strategies which render useful competitive advantage. SMEs tend to employ poor and low-income workers and are sometimes the only source of employment in poor and rural areas. They are usually wide spread and reach out to a vast population of a country even in remote areas. This role of SMEs is particularly important in the developing countries where there is lot of poverty.

Financing is one of the many problems the smaller businesses face. For SMEs, financial resources are often limited which often force the companies to select solutions which appear to be cheap initially but later the hidden costs surface during various stages of execution resulting in financial crises. Higher costs of R&D (Research AND Development) and training are issues where SMEs find difficulties especially in the face of limited capability of development and production.Due to their small size, SMEs usually lack management capacity and their ability to access and analyse information is particularly weak. They cannot afford costly support services like financial, human resource, legal and training etc. At a more strategic level, SMEs do not have the capacity to influence the overall business environment in their favour as larger firms possess. In addition to assistance provided by SMEDA, SMEs themselves have to take measures to address the problems. They must develop strong management teams and adopt a culture of learning and sharing of knowledge with other SMEs. For financial assistance, SMEs have to rely on banks and have to find ways to overcome banks' shyness to finance smaller businesses.

Small And Medium Businesses Embrace Servers Running Linux

Although we are aware of Linux adoption by large enterprises, most people do not know that there are sizeable numbers of installations in small and medium businesses (SMBs) as well. This base is set to grow as server vendors lob tailor made Linux servers and applications at SMBs.Country manager, pSeries & Open power, IBM says, "Unlike large enterprises, SMBs do not have to face the challenge of migrating legacy applications. The popularity with SMBs has helped Linux grow at 30 percent globally".
The general consensus is that Linux did better in 2004 than anyone had predicted. Director Enterprise Marketing & alliances, Customers solution Group, HP India says, " As per IDC India, Linux in the server market grew by 48 percent in OND, 2004 over JAS, 2004, while the windows and Unix markets showed a modest 3 percent and 3.4 percent growth respectively during the same period." For any OS to succeed, applications need to be made available. SMBs can be major draw for Linux servers as it offers them lower TCO and tighter control on their IT spends. Since many SMBs already have home grown applications, a proprietary OS will be the single largest area of spending. It is here that Linux offers a big advantage. The availability of version 2.6 of the Linux kernel in Red hat Enterprise Linux 4 and Novell's SuSE 9 will give a big boost to vertical scalability. As SMBs become a part of the global supply chain, they want enterprise applications on Linux to keep their investment low. This trend will be a key enabler for the Linux server market worldwide.

Why Linux Based servers?

Cost is a factor and Linux offers better security as the source code of proprietary software is always kept a secret. With a community supporting it, any security hole in Linux is quickly found and patched. Linux not only lets an organization save on software costs, it also offers long term long term saving on hardware. Instead of being forced to upgrade software with Linux, an SMB can take control of its IT strategy. Chief technology officer of IDBI bank says, "You decide when you wish to upgrade, not the vendor, hence you get tighter control on your spending." This can be particularly important for users, such as SMBs that cannot afford to keep up with the pace of change in commercial software.

Business application and Linux

There is credit to Oracle for driving the Linux server market. During the early part of 2004, Oracle came up with a value offering. It offered pre- configured Oracle E-Business Suite special edition on Lintel Boxes for a 10 user License for $36,000USD. The traction of this offering was seen towards the end of 2004 when we closed a dozen deals that were in various stages of implementation, says General Manager, Oracle India. This is a testimony that SMBs are opting for Linux servers. SAP is following Oracle in making application available on Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

Customized and certified

All server vendors including HP, IBM and SGI are throwing their weight behind Linux and each has a SMB specific business strategy with significant initiatives to lure them.

HP has announced that some of its high end computing tools from the HP-UX environment are ported onto Linux and made available to SMBs. This includes a clustering solution called HP service guard for high availability of applications and management tools such as Systems insight Manager(SIM) and open view that offer third party integration. Additionally HP is creating a reference architecture stack, including hardware, OS, database and Middleware. HP certifies a stack so that customers can feel more confident on deploying their core business application on Linux. Linux servers are popular in high performance computing(HPC) environments such as research labs. IBM has recently launched a new family of eserver Openpower systems based on its Power5 processor specially designed for Linux. The Power5 comes with a micropartitioning technology called Virtualisation Engine(VE) wherein each processor can be sliced into ten virtual partitions with each partition acting as a new server. IBM's eserver Openpower 710 is a single CPU processor with 3 HDDs and 512 MB memory with RAID level 1 and 5. This eserver offers SMBs an affordable alternative to higher priced entry level Unix or Linux system. Openpower offers a 64bit platform at a price point of a 32 bit offering. We believe that it is the right product for the mass market. Sun Microsystems has the Sun fire V20 and V40 severs based on the 64 bit AMD Opteron processor, which has been successful with SMBs. It also offers the Solaris 10 Opetron combination. Sun is aiming to position Solaris 10 as its trump card to take the fight to commercial Linux with support - email, phone and onsite - available at a small price. Advanced scientific research, elite foods, Sage Design systems, Centre for DNA fingerprinting and diagnostics, are Sun customers running there core application on Linux. Linux servers are used by SMBs for CAD analysis, CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and FEA(Finite Element Analysis). Linux systems are rugged as they come with SGI Propack over and above the standard Linux Kernel. This gives customers the ability to scale there computing environments with independent I/O, memory and power supply.

Banking on Support

Linux is getting traction and getting into commercial business applications in verticals such as manufacturing, small banking and hospitality. Availability of tally o Linux will result in a new chapter being inked in the Linux server market. Red hat has 950 ISV partners who develop applications that run on its Linux distributions. Linux offers secure and scalable solutions to meet SMB requirements. IBM has 35 to 40 pure Linux partners that offers consultancy and assist it in integrating and implementing services for its customers who are using Linux.

Do Government Assistance Programs In Fact Assist Small Businesses?

Government budgets are relayed to various assistance programs whose purpose is to encourage economic activity in small businesses. It is often asked whether these programs do in fact fulfill their purpose or maybe these budgets are wasted?

A groundbreaking research jointly conducted by Ben-Gurion University and the Ministry of Industry, Trade & Labor elucidates this issue. Researchers Dr. Rami Schayek and Prof. Dov Dvir have developed an innovative model which measures the effect of government assistance programs on small businesses, identifies the most important components incorporated in the assistance program and determines which managerial, operational and behavioral activities should be focused in order to improve on business performance. The research included one hundred and thirty five small businesses which participated in the Ministry of Industry, Trade & Labor's Standard Coaching project. This project is one of several business coaching projects run by the ITL ministry and it is designed for small and medium businesses of five to one hundred employees. A business of five to ten employees is appointed up to one hundred coaching hours. A business of eleven to one hundred employees is appointed up to one hundred and fifty hours. The coaching project finances 75% of the cost of coaching. 25% are financed by the business.

Results indicate that there is a return on the tax payer's money!

Findings indicate that government assistance program involvement positively affects small business performance. The basic research model, which examined only the direct effect the assistance program has on small business performance, shows that the greater the number of quantitative components (hours of consultation; proximity of consultation encounters; range of issues incorporated into the consultation), and the higher the standard of qualitative components (level of the consultant's professional understanding of the respective subjects of consultation; level of organization and planning of the consultation process; level of trust, commitment and mutual understanding between consultant and small business owner), the higher will be the level of performance in the small business. When adding to the model an examination of indirect effects, assistance programs are shown to affect small business performance primarily through the consultant's influence on the small business owner which is expressed in the latter's motivation to take action, like as attention to the service provided after the sale, understanding the fluctuation in customer preferences and the small business's operative environment, and the need to measure and analyze customer satisfaction and respond to the customer's complaints regarding either the service or the product provided by the small business.

The consultant also affects the business owner with respect to the latter's ability to manipulate business opportunities through utilization of competitors' weaknesses and an understanding of the ways in which the small business as a whole may benefit the customer. Consultation raises the small business owner's level of awareness as to the need to innovate, take risks and increase the level of activity, both in implementing changes in the service or products he provides and as regards conduct in the face of competition. In fact, the consultation process motivates the small business owner to take actions which would raise the level of market orientation and entrepreneurship in the small business, and as a result initiate an increase in its level of performance.

How is it possible to win an even greater return?

The findings of Dr. Schayek's doctorate thesis supervised by Prof. Dov Dvir, facilitate recommendation on a number of issues which could intensify the effect of public assistance programs on performance in small businesses. Thus it is important that the consultant emphasize before the client that submitting reliable and comprehensive information to the consultant, as well as willingness on the part of the business owner to implement changes in accordance with decisions reached as a result of cooperation with the consultant, is paramount for the success of the assistance process and the improvement on performance in the small business. Based on the research model, the client constitutes an integral part of the assistance program. The more involved and active he becomes in the process of coaching, the greater will be the assistance program's positive effect on the small business' performance.

In addition, the research indicates that effort must be made on the part of the consultant in improving the client's capacity of raising finance. You own a hair salon and find an article about back to school hairstyles in your community newspaper. A local competitor is extensively cited. You questions, why you were not asked. You are a brewery and las against use of an article in the business section of a major newspaper about strategies breweries multinational beer companies compete, but your company is not mentioned. You are developing a new data mining application and search for resellers to kick-start sales. Read an article in a magazine about a new data mining application companies looking for resellers computer trade...

Why was your company left out?

Ask yourself: what have I done to gain the attention of the media? What public relations have lit I to gain media moths for my business candles?

WHY THE TROUBLE WITH PR?
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) often neglect public relations, and then wondering why the media never called. Many SMEs consider public relations (PR) for companies such as IBM, Microsoft, big banks, automotive and beer companies or the Government.

Nonsense! PR is a cost effective marketing tool. Positive media coverage provide an SME with a much-needed boost.

Public relations spawnen 28% of sales requests, second on the advertising 39%, according a study by request handling services Inc. in San Fernando, California.

Consumers to consider advertising with a degree of skepticism. However, if you read the same message in a newspaper or magazine article, they are more inclined to obtain further information.

THEIR PRESS RELEASE AS OBJECTIVE
The best way is to reach the media write and send press releases and corresponding editors, journalist and freelance writers work for publications and broadcast outlets that reach your target audience.

Instead, describe the history or your company should tell the press release certain one or two pages, including the context for the story.

Are you an IT company with dramatically increased sales? Then they are bucking IT slowing down.  Produce it will be an ecological product, which must once the Kyoto agreement is implemented?

Do you see the headlines? Database sales double in middle of IT breaking. Kyoto good for the environment and economy.

Your production site of ISO9000 certified? Perhaps, globe and mail will not cover, that the story, but it might make aligned headlines in a trade magazine on your target audience. But not tells the story will be, unless, of course, a reporter about it stumbles, or issue a press release.

Donate your hair salon, the revenue on a Saturday to a local food bank or solemn? This is a history of value to say. If you are a celebrity coming in a style have received, could write even the TV news. If you are hide your light under a bushel but media not known that you do something newsworthy.

It is up to you, any messages to detect when they occur, and then press releases by e-Mail.

Press releases are not spam, as long as you send as right target reporters and once each message.

If you are writing the release internally you can a company as Canada Newswire (http://www.newswire.ca) to distribute it or create and maintain a media - contact database and can output of your own publications. Alternatively, you can contract the writing and distribution of a freelance writer or PR firm.

PR IS NO PAID ADVERTISING
PR is not paid advertising. You control not the last message. You send your press release and hope the media will use it whole or in part, or call for more information. This happens frequently when a reporter working on a larger story about the impact of the legal, political, ecological or social/cultural changes on your industry.

If the media calling comes, you must be questions about your company and its place ready in your industry.

If the media does not bite, do not despair. It may take more than one version before you noticed the media. Timing is also important. If you are a seasonal message and you are a monthly objectives, you need your message from three or four months in advance.

While no guarantees in the world of PR, there when you tell a compelling story and send it to the right editors and journalist for the right publications, increase you your chances of a PR hit. In addition if you get a hit in the correct publication, create awareness for your products and services and customers to your door or website.

Five Things You Need To Remember Before Starting a Small Business

Everyone knows someone who has decided to go into small business but did you know that 70% of all small businesses fail within the first 12 months of operation. In some countries that failure rate is as high as 85 to 90%. Small Business is one of the toughest industries you can ever decide to take on and most people who go into small business go into it for the wrong reason.

I have started 4 small businesses over the last 10 years and every single one of them has been started from scratch and survived into a thriving business. Just recently I have decided to sell one of the businesses off cause it had done what I expected it to do which is the first issue you need to think about.

Issue 1. Have a Clear Understanding of What You Want To Achieve In Your Business

The majority of people, who actually go into business, go into it for the wrong reasons. Even I have been guilty of that. So what is this wrong reason, most people start a small business because they believe they can do a better job then their current boss. Maybe this is true, maybe it is not but what most people really want is better working conditions and better pay. No one can blame you for wanting that. If that is all you want, then I strongly suggest you stay away from small business.

One of the key issues you must remember before evening thinking about starting a small business is this. Do you know what your business will look like? If you were walking down the street, how would you want to be found? What impression do you want to give to your clients? What clearly do you what to achieve in this business?

The second clear understanding you must have of your business is, when will you know when it is finished? When you have built what you want to achieve and more importantly, how will you get out?

See most people when they go into business have no exit strategy and that is one of the worst things you can do. Before you ever start a business, the first thing you must work out is how you are going to get out of the business.

Two years ago, I started a small car cleaning business. My wife and I both started it because she wanted to see if she could build a business. Our exit strategy was to sell the business once it was done. How we would sell it was something we were not sure of?

See we could have taken a number of approaches to this. Our exit strategy could have been to franchise the business, sell it to a single owner or to float it on the stock market. We chose that we only wanted to sell it to another owner, but we still built the business in such a way that there was still plenty of growth and opportunity in the business for the new owner, but we had removed the risk for them on how to run the business by clearly documenting everything they needed to do to run that business.

Before ever starting a business, always think about how you will exit the business, when you have achieved your objective for that business. If you do not have an exit strategy in mind, then you will never get out of the business.

Issue 2. Keep a Strict Schedule

Small business is consuming. Unlike in large corporations where you can hire many people to do a range of tasks, small business requires the small business owner to do many of the tasks themselves. Some of the tasks include doing your books, lodging trademarks, doing the ordering etc. Often when you start in small business, you can not afford to hire people to do these tasks.

What I have personally found is that if you do not keep a tight schedule and document your meetings and tasks you have to do then it will not take very long before you will be swamped by all the things you have to do in the business every day. It is this phenomenon that often leads small business owners to quit and fail in the first twelve months. Let me tell you this, the warning signs that this is starting is when you say to your wife on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon that you are going down to the office to catch up on paperwork for a few hours. Once you get into this habit, you will never stop doing it and the business will consume you really quickly.

I strongly recommend all small business owners keep a diary. My preference is to use Microsoft Outlook, simply because it includes a calendar and you can make sure that each day you schedule your work plus your appointments to make sure you do not forget anything. If you do this, then you will find over time you can get through this plus you will learn how long it should take to do the various jobs that make up your business and whether it is worthwhile in getting someone to actually do those tasks for you.

Issue 3. Build Your Own Mastermind Group

I read a book a little while ago called Think and Grow Rich and is written by a gentleman called Napoleon Hill and he talks about the thirteen secrets to success and obscene wealth. One of the things that I learned both from this book and being a small business owner was that I needed a Mastermind Group.

The Mastermind Group is simply a group of professionals who can help me achieve my objectives for my business. Literally anyone can be part of your mastermind group and some of those would be people like a lawyer, an accountant and other people like your peers who can help you in building your business but it may also include people who are not in business as well to help you keep that balance. The Mastermind Group are really those people you turn to for advice and direction. You do not necessarily have to take their advice but a good mastermind group will allow you run through scenarios on what is happening and the potential outcomes.

Issue 4. Have one night when you do something on your own for you!

One of the big issues that I have had over the last ten years is that I have not been doing every single week is something on my own but I say that I am in the process of changing that. Often when you start in business, with the excitement of building your own business you get so consumed that you forget about a life outside of your business and your business becomes your life.

This is really not a good thing nor is it healthy. Even multi-billionaires do things for themselves outside of business. Look do not get me wrong, business is fantastic and fun and can be both enjoyable and a nightmare however there are other things out there outside of business.

When you start a small business, do not neglect your sports, do not neglect doing something social, if you do, in the long run you will find that you business suffers. Plus, in small business it is very easy to become bitter and twisted but by maintaining those none business activities it will help you to balance your life.

Issue 5. Don't neglect Your Partner or your Family

I would love to see the divorce statistics for small business owner's because I am quite sure that the divorce rate in small business would have to be about 70 or 80%. The majority of married couples (and I am talking about 90% of the small business people I Know) that I know who have gone into small business in their 30's have actually been divorced within 18 months of them starting the business.

Look there are lots of reasons why this happens, but in a lot of the cases, the partner who has gone into business neglects their family and money gets tight. In the partners case it is not their fault it is simply because the person gets consumed into the business and they forget they have a life outside of the business.

If you have a family, make sure that you do at least one activity a week as a family. Whether it is having a family night at home such as a video night or games night, or even just going to the park to play once a week, make sure that you do it. PLUS, you must ensure that at least one night a week must be for just you and your partner. If you do not do that your marriage or relationship will suffer.

One thing I share with all the people who come through our training business is that if you want to go into business that is cool but you must be prepared to accept two things -

1. You must be prepared to start from scratch if your business does not work
that is you must be prepared to start with just the shirt on your back.

2. You must have 100% support of your partner and family

If you cannot accept these two things, then do not go into business because too many people who I see that start on this journey fail and end up miserable and have such a downward spiral which leads them to doing something silly, like take up drinking, drugs or try to commit suicide. Remember, 70% of all small businesses fail within the first 12 months. If you were a betting man would you back something that only had a 30% chance of winning, not likely, yet people still go into small business.

The bottom line is this, small business can be the most awesome ride of your life, but it can be also the most difficult and when you choose to go into small business, take your time and plan what you want to achieve. Remember the old saying if your Fail to Plan, you Plan to Fail.
